Cactus McCoy and the Curse of the Thorns is the first game in the Cactus McCoy platformer series. The game was announced on December 29, 2010 and officially released on March 10, 2011.

Description[]

A treasure hunter for hire, with a curse on his soul, and a bounty on his head.

The ancient Curse of Thorns has taken hold of its latest victim, a man now known across the Wild West as Cactus McCoy. It all started when McCoy was hired by Hex Hatfield to find the Thorned Emerald. Unaware of the jewel's curse, McCoy was transformed into a walking, talking, brawling cactus. Now it is a race against time to bring the Thorned Emerald back to its proper home before Cactus McCoy is turned to a lifeless stone cactus.

This platforming brawler game will have you wielding tons of weapons as you traverse a strange Wild West world of hidden treasures and seemingly endless enemigos. Can you become the toughest Cactus in town, and break the ancient Curse of Thorns?

Music[]

Unlike most Flipline games, which only use original music, Cactus McCoy and the Curse of Thorns used royalty-free licensed music created by other artists. While the artists originally went uncredited, they were later credited in the sequel, which reuses all four tracks in addition to a fifth track which was commissioned for the sequel.

  • Title Screen Music: "Showdown (Underscore Version)" by Jeremy Sherman[1]
  • Cutscene Music: "Pass the Spaghetti" by Patrick Smith[2]
  • Main Level Theme: "Spaghetti Western" by Dan Foster[3][4]
  • Alternate Level Theme: Unknown track by Wayne Westman

Awards[]

Medalla

The Jay-is reward for the best of 2011

Cactus McCoy and the Curse of Thorns was nominated for "Best of 2011" awards by Jay-is-games. It later took first place in the Action-Platform category.[5]

Trivia[]

  • The names Hatfield and McCoy refer to the Hatfield and McCoy family feud that took place in the United States in the mid-1800s.
  • Badges were introduced in this game.
  • The guitar and roman candle would later be reused in Papa Louie 2: When Burgers Attack!, as Zoe's and Boomer's weapons respectively.
  • The first post on the Flipline Blog was the trailer for this game.
  • This game was sponsored by Not Doppler, along with its sequel.
  • The Thorned Emerald is featured in the Foodini minigame, Mitch's Mess.
  • Matt and Tony were inspired to create this game after creating The Expendables 8-Bit.[6]
  • The game's Southwest theme was inspired by seeing a Spanish-speaking website use the term "Enemigo" in its description of Papa Louie: When Pizzas Attack!.[6]
  • It took over three months to develop this game.[7]
  • The underscore version of "Showdown" was also used in the Remnants of Skystone soundtrack.
  • Cactus McCoy is seen holding Hex Hatfield's gun on the title screen, the opening cutscene, and much of the game's promotional material. However, McCoy does not obtain the gun in actual gameplay until the player achieves 100% completion.
  • The game's official poster, available on CafePress, features two oddities. While it at first appears to feature all of the game's enemigos, the green bazooka enemigo is oddly missing. Additionally, the brown swinging enemigo is not present, though a brown recolor of the purple whipping enemigo, which does not appear in the final game, is present instead.
