The Mawglin: Rise of the Half-Breed was a sidescrolling adventure/RPG game developed by Tony Solary and Matt Neff in 2002-2003, prior to the establishment of Flipline Studios. The game's demo version was briefly available to play online on the Shockwave platform for both PC and Mac. The game was never completed and the demo version has been taken down. Since only the flash-based menu remains and the demo has never been re-released or recovered, it can be considered partially-lost media.
In the game, players took on the role of Grummel, a half-breed descended from the species of Grynn and Torok. After being exiled from the village of Willowgrove, Grummel was left to fend for himself in the forest. As he struggles to survive alone in the forest, Grummel befriends Romp, a friendly Rokling who helps him navigate the treacherous terrain.
The plot of the game revolved around Grummel's quest to save the villagers of Willowgrove from an unknown menace that had overrun the land. Players had to navigate Grummel through various levels, fighting off enemies, and unlocking the key to the campgrounds to advance to the next area. The enemies were organized into squadrons, and players had to defeat the leader of each squadron to progress through the game.
Gameplay Controls[]
Players had to use the arrow keys to move Grummel around the forest, with Shift used to go in and out of the shell, and Ctrl to pick up items. The mouse cursor was used as a target.
Cast[]
Grummel[]
A half-breed, cross between the species of Grynn and Torok, Grummel and his Grynn mother were exiled from the village of Willowgrove during his childhood. He has lived alone in the forest for many years, his only friend being Romp. He is skilled at rolling in his shell and was once trained in using a boomerang.
Romp[]
Romp is a friendly Rokling from the outskirts of Willowgrove. He is Grummel's only close friend. They befriended each other shortly after the death of Grummel's mother. Romp knows his way around the forest and is always there to give Grummel some well-needed advice.
Flint[]
Crafty and cunning, Flint is the master of stealth and strategic fighting. As a Rokling, he may not have the strength, but he definitely has the knowledge to teach you some well-needed skills.
Dink[]
A hardworking entrepreneur from Willowgrove, he owns Dink's Surplus and is well-known within the community.
Unknown[]
These strange creatures are of unknown origin. They are large, strong and smell horrible. However, they seem to lack in brains. There has to be a reason why they have come to this land and kidnapped the villagers.
